The Hawthorn tree has very special symbolism for me since my
childhood growing up in the midlands surrounded by its abundant
fragrant blossom. It represents an innocence and worldliness.
Traditionally the Hawthorn tree was planted in hedgerows
acting as boundaries and enclosures for farm animals; guarding woodland
sanctuaries portraying its protective force.
Physical, moral and spiritual purity which humans struggle
for, is symbolised in the overflowing abundance of the white flowers,
thereby playing a role at fertility, marriage rites and spring
celebrations for millennia.
The Hawthorn blossom is hermoraphrodite, strongly associating
the balance of male and female.
